Pa. lawmaker’s plan to fine uninsured drivers causes controversy

Posted on September 1st, 2010 No Comments

The plan proposed by the Governor of Pennsylvania to fine uninsured motorists by using traffic cameras to cross-reference their vehicle to see if the car has an insurance policy with it is facing some backlash.

The plan was thought of in order to raise funds for the state because the Governor predicts that the plan will generate $115 million annually. One flaw that has been found is the fact that insurance companies would have to be on top of keeping real time data available.

People switch companies and change their plans frequently and the technology is not available to have this information as current as possible whenever the car’s photo is taken. Also, the fact that people may use different variations of their name may make it difficult to find out if the person is on the insurance account that the vehicle is registered under.

Surveillance cameras installed to catch uninsured drivers

Posted on July 29th, 2010 No Comments

A proposal was submitted in Pennsylvania to install surveillance cameras in order to find uninsured drivers and create transportation revenue.

The system would install cameras along the highway to take pictures of car’s license plates as they pass and they cross- reference them to see if they have insurance on the vehicle.

A notice and fine will then be sent to the person by mail. The Governor has estimated that the system could generate $115 million in revenue a year. Some lawmakers are against this idea because they question how far the surveillance security will go.
